Frequently Asked Questions - Research Programmes

A student under Structure I (Degree by Research) is eligible for conferral of a degree after fulfilling the following conditions:

  • Passed the Dissertation/Thesis Examination
  • Passed the Viva Voce Examination
  • Has paid all the due fees
  • Has fulfilled other requirements as specified by the University.

A student under Structure II (Degree by Coursework and Research) is eligible for conferral of a degree after fulfilling the following conditions:

  • Achieved a final CGPA of at least 3.00
  • Passed the Dissertation Examination
  • Passed the Viva Voce Examination
  • Has paid all the due fees
  • Has fulfilled other requirements as specified by the University.

Yes. The procedures of nomination are similar to the appointment of local supervisor(s). However, if there is any additional cost incurred on the supervision, you may have to bear the cost.

The implication will depend on the stage of your research work. However, you have to discuss with your new supervisor(s) on the progress of your research based on the feedback from previous supervisor(s).

The experts of various field of studies may be internally available at AeU or come from other higher learning institutions or from the industry, locally as well as internationally. We have an unlimited pool of expertise to support the postgraduate programmes.

It is better for you to have a heart to heart discussion first with your current supervisor(s). However, if an amicable solution is not possible, you may apply to change your supervisor.

As  frequently as you can but you are advised to have at least 3 meetings per semester. You can discuss either face to face or via online or other modes of communications. Please make the necessary appointments prior to the actual meetings. Record all meetings and have them signed by both of you.

You can discuss with your potential supervisor(s) and seek their agreement. You can send the nomination form together with their CV to the Dean of the respective School at a later stage. However, AeU Senate shall give the final approval.

For research students, it is advisable to have a supervisor as soon as possible. You can identify your supervisor(s) for AeU by appointing them using Form SGS S001. Until your substantive supervisor has been nominated, the Dean of your School shall be your academic advisor.

No. Instead you will be assigned an advisor, which is usually one of our full-time academic staff. Once your research proposal has been approved, the university will assign you a research supervisor.

Yes. The PhD in Business Administration is approved by Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA).

Yes. The PhD programmes are approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

The part time programmes are targeted to adults with work and family commitments. Hence, the part time programmes are designed to fit their busy schedule and lifestyle. The full time programmes are catered to adults who have the luxury fully on studying and would like to complete their education in a shorter period.

The PhD thesis should not exceed 100,000 words.

You can register for the PhD programme anytime of the year.

Currently, the specialisations at AeU include areas in Business Administration, Education and ICT. More areas of specialisations shall be expanded in the near future.

  • Business Administration

Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management and Development, Banking and Finance, Economics, Accounting, and other relevant fields in Organizational Behavior, International Business, Entrepreneurship and Public Administration.

  • Education

Curriculum Development and Instruction, Science and Mathematics Education, Educational Assessment and Evaluation, Educational Management and Leadership, Language and Literacy, and Educational Psychology.

  • ICT

Database Management and Engineering, Information System and Knowledge Management System, Software Engineering, E-Learning and Mobile Computing, Web Services, Visual Informatics, Telecommunication, Networking, ICT Management and other relevant fields in Digital Divide, Fuzzy Logics, Computational Math, Discrete Math, and Enterprise Resources System.

AeU believes in lifelong learning. Hence, there is no maximum period of study.

The full time PhD programme will take 3 years to complete.

The part time PhD programmes will take 4 years to complete.

Our PhD programmes are conducted both full time and part time.

Currently, AeU offers the following PhD programmes:

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Arts

Yes. The DBA programme is approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Ministry of Education (MOE).

Yes. The monthly research workshops are conducted every semester and you are encouraged to attend. To obtain the latest research workshops schedule, kindly email lsc@aeu.edu.my

The dissertation should not exceed more than 80,000 words.

You are required to complete the following 10 modules:

  • Advanced Accounting and Finance
  • International Business
  • Strategic Marketing
  • Advanced Economics Analysis
  • Business Strategy and Policy
  • Research Methodology 1
  • Research Methodology 2
  • New Business Venture
  • Advanced Statistics
  • Organisational Leadership

Both. You must complete two components of the DBA programme – modules and dissertation. You must successfully complete the modules before proceeding to the dissertation.

You can register for the DBA programme anytime of the year.

There are  5 intakes per year for the DBA programme – February, May, July, October and December.

AeU believes in lifelong learning. Hence, there is no maximum period of study.

The DBA programme will take 3 years to complete.

 

The recommendation from the Examination Committee shall be one of the following: 
  • Dissertation/Thesis is accepted subject to (a) minor modifications being made, or (b) major modification being made
  • Dissertation/Thesis requiring re-submission
  • Dissertation/Thesis is rejected with no right of revision or resubmission

No, your supervisor will only provide the examiners with any assistance they require but will not take an active part in the viva voce.

The Committee for Master’s Degree shall comprise of the Dean of School of Graduate Studies (SGS) or representative, one Internal Examiner and one External Examiner. The Committee for Doctoral degree shall comprise of the Dean or representative, one Internal Examiner and two External Examiners.

The viva voce will be conducted when all the examiners’ reports of your final thesis or dissertation have been received.

A viva voce refers to an oral examination taken at the end of a Master or Doctoral research degree programme. It is used to test the ability of the student to present orally his/her knowledge of the subject-matter being examined in the thesis or dissertation examination.

Yes, besides English, you are allowed to write in Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin and Arabic. However, the language used is subjected to the approval of your supervisor(s) and Dean of the respective School.

Yes, provided the supervisor(s) agree. However, the AeU Senate has the final decision.

You are allowed to proceed your work subjected it be accepted during the proposal defense.

Yes. We shall assist you to find a suitable supervisor(s) to guide in your research work.
